Rebekah Elkerton is an Anishinaabe artist from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. Through a creative interplay of striking colors, Elkerton paints portraits of women with the aim of decolonizing stereotypical images of women. Some of her paintings are self-portraits while others are representations of close friends who have shared their stories with her.
Elkerton’s paintings are completed with the use of Acrylic paint on salvaged wood. She often uses wood that has been discarded by her neighbours with the aim of giving new purpose to old materials. Elkerton is inspired by a continual process of self-discovery, specifically her relationship to indigenous womanhood and spirituality.
